When visiting new places, time is the enemy but if you plan to have a a short vacation stay in New York then you should have ample time in this busy city to explore and see all the ‘must do places’. It may be a very busy visitor attraction but you couldn’t visit New York without seeing the Empire State Building. For even better views, when the weather is fine, it requires a trip to the top of the 820 feet tall Rockefeller Centre. Taking a ferry trip and stopping off at the former immigration center on Ellis Island will allow great views of the Statue of Liberty without the long delays that have been normal since 9/11.

Thankfully, the Staten Island ferry is free and provides some great views of the Lower Manhattan skyline and the Statue of Liberty, there are always a good number of professional standard street performers to watch. If you are spending a short vacation in New York you’ve got to see the site where the World Trade Center Towers stood, something that changed all our lives. It is true to say that the location does affect people emotionally and until you are there, it is hard to imagine just how much space was taken up by the Twin Towers. An emotionally lighter attraction is to visit some of the famous stores like Tiffany’s or the Lower East side area where there are numerous bargain warehouses to look around.
Whereas there are stores like Macey’s who are happy to take your tourist discount card and give you an eleven percent discount to the very exclusive Bloomingdales who probably won’t. An excellent tourist location is the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum which is likely to be closed until the end of 2008, well worth looking in if your around at that time of the grand re-opening. There is a great deal there with the USS Intrepid taking center stage being a Second World War aircraft carrier but there is a Concorde and other underwater vessels there too. The New York City Police Museum is worth an hour if you’re down that way; it’s free to enter but a five dollar donation is recommended to help with its upkeep, especially for those people in love with the crime side of New York City!
The migrant period of New York is highlighted in an excellent exhibition at the Lower East Side Tenement Museum where scenes of what made America a great place to be are alongside of scenes America would like to forget. For a step back in time it worth going to Central Park where the New York Museum is located, this is an exhibition of many periods relating to the life of The Big Apple. More can be learned about the city’s past in this grand building and although once again admission is free, a donation of 9 dollars is advised. As I am sure you can imagine if you have been on a trip to any major capital city, there is far more to see and do than a short stay or even a a short vacation trip to New York can accomplish.
